Darling, I am not the one.
The one. The other half. That “you complete me moment”, that’s waiting on the other side of falling, falling, falling in love with that one person, who will give sense to all this senseless striving - swiping - ghosting - languishing.
Darling, I am not the one. I could tell you that before we ever even meet.
I can’t be.
All that longing, hoping, wishing, praying, bargaining, begging, demanding, grasping, patiencing; Waiting, waiting, waiting for the "right" person to come along finally.
All that dreaming of a blessed day of relief when you will finally announce:
"The search is over. I’ve found them."
What you dream of has been waiting for you all along. It was born the very moment you took your very first breath.
I cannot be the one, my darling. There is only one ‘the one’, and that, dear heart, is you. What you long for is to fall truly, madly, deeply, freely, stupidly, and breathlessly in love with you.
You are waiting for the moment when you catch your own smile in the mirror
And you take your own breath away.
You are waiting for the moment when you feel your own sweet hand on your heart,
And you’re flooded with the aching relief that finally the searching is over.
You are waiting for the moment when you stare the hopeless romantic Disney illusion in the face
And finally see, really see, that behind and underneath is your own little self - soft, tender, and oh so unquestionably worthy and precious.
Their chubby little arms outstretched, eyes wet in disbelief,
Asking: can you see me? Will you hold me now?
I’ve been here in the darkness, calling and calling… no one answered.
Can it be? You’ve finally come home?
You envelop them - you - in the fullness of your present embrace.
You whisper soft: “I’m sorry’s” “I got so lost’s”
“They showed me all the wrong places where to find you”
“I looked and I looked, I promise. I never stopped looking for you. I always knew the day would come.”
And you both surrender to that ocean of tears. Bittersweet tears of homecoming; tears for lost years.
“Hold my hand now, little one. I swear to you I will not forget. Till my last breath, I won't turn away again.”
